Recently I have been having a lot of trouble with the death machine.
We tried to go for a ride a while back and the POS wouldn't even start up when we got out there and unloaded.
Well my brother and I fooled around with this thing today.
I thought it was the stator or pickup coil. So we ohm metered those two and they came out good.
Next we ohm the coil. The coil itself showed good but when we tried the high tension lead we got no reading. How is this possible I thought. The machine would actually start now and idle but if you gave it any power while in gear it just blubbered and spit or would even stall out.
How can a machine idle fine but then no go ?? WTF ??
I cut a 1/4" off the end of the lead and tried again with the meter. Failed.
So I finally gave in and pulled the high tension lead right out of the coil. I though for sure this lead was part of the coil and if you pull it out it's fkd. I was wrong. The homo's at Honda glue this thing in as well as glue the rubber boot on. After I cleaned out the pocket you could see the metal stub that the new lead would stick on. It seems to have no threads so basically the wire would just be stuck on and no way to hold it. So I will be JB Welding it in when done.
By the way I had several coils and two failed the ohm test and the other two passed.
Then I took this old high tension lead and cut several 1/4" off and sliced them open. See pics.
You will notice in one pic that the wire inside the lead was broken and corroded.
I don't know how it even started up and idled.

Spark was filling the gaps between the bad connections. To a point spark will stop all together. At idle, there is also less charge voltage than at higher rpm. You did the right thing fixing this problem. I had the same thing with my pilot - the coil wouldn't ohm out well until I replaced the plug.
