Post subject:  My Sons FL350R Restore

Hello to one and all, I bought this 1985 Odyssey FL350R last year off of ebay for my son.

I am an auto tech. by trade and tell my customer's all the time to look under the hood before you buy anything, well I did not look under the hood and got took real good. It was the flashy red paint that did it!!!

Anyway I took the Odyssey apart just to replace the steering parts, brakes, u-joints and wheel bearings. I was going to have it done for him for christmas.

Well that did not work out to well, I have since taken it completely apart and started restoring it from the ground up.

His birthday is this Thursday the 25th., I have closed my shop for the week and am trying to finish it for him.
I have set things up so that I have until Sunday the 28th.

Wish me luck I am not as young as I used to be and more of a perfectionist than ever ( drives me crazy ).

File comment: I spent an entire day last weekend wire brushing the transmission by hand. Tried cleaner's, wire brush on drill and sand blasting. All did not work, the drill and sand blasting was leaving deep grooving.

If you look at the bracket you can see what the caliper looked like before brushing. All honda parts.

Thank you, it is going very slow we have been sanding and painting for two days.
My son does not have a clue what my wife and I are going thru for him, he thinks we work all the time because we want to.

Hello, my son is going to be 16.

The pilot caliper bolts right on, the only difference between the two is the e. brake bracket and the mounting bracket.
I had to use a pilot brake cable, the whole on the e. brake arm at the caliper where the cable hooks up is smaller on the odyssey.
The pilot brake cable is 5 or 6 inches longer which is a bummer but I think it will work out ok.
The advantage is you have the brake indicator, the return spring and you can hook a brake switch to it. Which I am doing at some point.

I am putting a pilot steering wheel on, I first did this to get rid of the cables and go to all hydraulic.
I decided to use a pilot wiring harness and add all the switches and sensors, hope it goes well not even close to that stage yet.

I painted again all day today, I have almost everything painted.
I will put the front suspension and hopefully the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) in tomorrow.

I will post some more pics when I have some actual progress and more parts put on. Hopefully tomorrow.

Steve -hate to mention this but that tank will need to be removed to install the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) to trans brackets,you'll never get the bolts in them at all.Love the fuel sensor and Pilot harness, please keep us up on the install and useage of them, are you going to use a Pilot wheel with it, I do think the splines are the same on the top of the steering shafts,meaning the 350 can be used on the Pilot wheel.Are you going to fab brackets for the Pilot electrical systems (which mount on the frame)or eliminate them?
The tank will slide back in there after you tighten and install the brackets and trans-no worries at all there.

Hello Gregg, yes I know. I am going to turn the bracket by the fuel tank around backwards, I have checked and it will clear with no problems and in the future I might not have to remove the tank to pull the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) or trans.

Yes I am using a pilot wheel and brackets for the wiring, I have a bent pilot frame that I am going to cut the brake switch bracket off of and I have a pilot radiator assy., I am going to cut the whole cross bar out of the frame where the radiator mounts to from the pilot frame. Not sure how that is going to go yet.

I will post some more pics here in just a bit.

Ok my deadline is shot to hell, I should have known better.

I have not been able to do hardly anything this week, had a lot of work after being closed.

Everything is going well, spent a good amount of the time I had off just sanding, wire brushing and painting painting painting.

Here are some pics of where I am at now, getting back on it tomorrow.

VERY VERY NICE ---clean-crisp-I love it-keep it up!!!!
I especially love the OEM bolts and how the heck did you find OEM rubbers for that front bumper?They are very very hard to find-nice touch indeed!!!!
Are those rubber dust seals on the front end new, they look it!!!

Good evening, are you talking about the seals for the J arm bushings. If so no they are not new I wish, I have been scrubbing everything with brake cleaner and soap and water. Lots and lots of elbow grease.

I got very lucky and was able to get a brand new front bumper kit off of ebay.

Thank you, I told you I was a perfectionist almost to the point of insanity. Actually I am driving my self crazy wanting everything just right.

For example I painted the front brake backing plates and then sanded the contact area where you mount them, I put a little silicone on the mounting surface and lock tight on the bolts and installed one of the backing plates. I then realized that some of the surface I had sanded was overhanging the mounting surface, thought about just touching it up but I could not get to the whole area. So I paced the floor for about five minutes and then decided to take the dam thing off and paint the exposed surface area. I had to clean all the silicone back off and clean the bolts again, see what I mean.

One thing that amazed me is that the ball joints are in excellent condition, no play very tight. Did Honda make good stuff or what.

Anyway I better get some sleep, have a great 4th. of July Gregg and everyone.

SC, you're doing a fantastic job, I wish I had the same anally retentive pedantic nature.

I just do what I can to make mine work & then I'm happy. :-)

Thanks guy's I really appreciate it, now I need a pilot steering wheel cover with all the switches.

I bought one a while back but the switches are all melted, if anyone has the cover and switches or even the whole steering wheel assy. please let me know.
