I have a 2007 toyota tundra with 50,000 miles. Yes, low mileage as I really only drive it during the winter.

I have a question for all those that live in the midwest or areas that use salt for the ice in the winter time. Is there any undercoating that can be used or shops that could be recommended in order to reduce any rust on the chassis of my truck? I have heard of various products (wool wax, 3m undercoating, etc.), but am hearing and reading mixed reviews.

Appreciate any thoughts or recommendations.

Hey long time no see!

Go to YouTube and search for home made rust proofing or DYI rust proofing to get some ideas

The best I found over the years was Plow Coat I got from Farm and Fleet. I mixed it really good with a power mixer on a drill then poured it in a pressure pot sprayer and sprayed the entire underside of the frame and body, do not do the Engine trans exhaust etc.
MIX IT GOOD all the solids are on the bottom and its hard to get them back into suspension. If you go with plow coat spray outside in the grass its about impossible to get off concrete! Also wear cloths your going to throw away or double layer bunny suits, and a stocking cap to protect the hair.... Its a messy process.

Last I looked they wanted 50 bux a gallon for Plow Coat at Farm and Fleet, the last time I bought it years ago it was 10 bux a gallon. Search online see what the farmers are using today.

Then there is Ziebart they have the best system going but its expensive. https://www.ziebart.com/auto-care-servi ... n-services.

Isn't the Toyota Tundra the one that last 300k + miles and really reliable? If it is, its probably worth the investment ,as it will probably rust out before you wear it out.

Also check out Scotty Kilmer on YouTube see what he says. https://www.youtube.com/@scottykilmer

Good seeing you again!

NOTHING I have ever tried in a spray can you buy at retail stores has ever worked, spray it on and its gone in a year.

Let us know what you find, run across any interesting or promising links drop them here I need to do my vehicles, salt is coming soon!

Thanks for the response!
I will need to do more research. I was looking at Ziebart but there were a lot of negative reviews.

Yeah, I think the Tundra will last, but I just worry about the chassis and under carriage. LOL....it is the same one we used to pick up that FL350 many years ago.......ahh good times...

My caravan is 23 years old and still runs decent with 170,000 miles on it, but the chassis is rotting away and I just don't want the Tundra to end up the same way.

LOL....funny you mention Scotty Kilmer. He is one of my son's and I favorite YouTuber. We have written him before and he has answered us so that might be the route to take.

I am also going to check out the Plow Coat.

Thanks again!

Ask Scotty Kilmer about the Tundra... See if he will reply.

Any more thoughts on the rust proofing?

Ran across this note by accident in my mess of papers, Its NOT in my handwriting so will assume someone suggested it to me long ago.

"Locktite 75430 Extended Rust Treatment www.powertrainproducts.net"

I looked it up and it is NOT cheap and probably why I stuck with the Plow Coat from Farm and Fleet.

Preview on the pricing, your mileage may vary. If someone was lucky they might work some place that buys it in bulk so could ask for a sample to test it out...

I been fighting rust since I started driving, I tried all the retail store products. Rust Removers, Rust converters, Spray on undercoatings etc. they lasted about one winter so I gravitated to the inexpensive (then) Plow Coat which I still love. There might be better products on the market its been 20 years since investigating.

I did have good luck with Rust Converters like Rust Mort but do not remember the longevity and durability of the product, I do remember using it on interior floor boards with great success without top coating.

Rust Mort is not cheap and you would need to investigate the product today since it been more than 20 years since I used it. I do remember a little goes a long way.

I will assume Plow Coat became my favorite simply because you power wash the underside of the auto, blow out all the cracks and crevices with compressed air, let the underside dry completely then spray on the Plow Coat.

What say you?

Hello,

Still doing some research. Thanks for looking into this for me! I truly appreciate it. I am still waiting for Scotty to reply back as well. I know he is pretty busy, so I will give him a few more days. My son emailed him about 4 months ago when he was buying his corolla, and he responded back within a few hours, go figure....

I want to look more into your suggestions, there is a lot of info out there. The thing everyone agrees on is having it washed either at an indoor car wash or when the temps get above freezing, just to get rid of the salt....will let you know when I decide.

Thanks again
