Post subject:  FL400 Pilot rear axles

Well i've been toying around with the idea of buying a couple spare axles for quite some time now. I know its been discussed that the right side has been discontinued and the left is still available. I finally got around to placing the order and guess what the left side is now on back order with no ETA. That sounds like it is one step away from being discontinued to me.

Well i went ahead and placed an order for two. What the heck, it can not hurt to try. If anyone else wants to place an order please do. Hopefully this will send a message to Honda.

The part number is 42300-HE0-013.

Man can't get bearings for the tranny, can't get axles, not to mention all the other discontinued parts. They will run without oem tires and oem decals or even oem fenders but won't run without bearings and axles.

Well service Honda called me today and informed me that Honda had one axle to send me. Wow - i wonder if that is the last one as they showed 0. Goes to show ya even if they show 0 order it any way.

Wish i new more about Hondas parts inventory system. How do you show 0 but have 1.

Time will tell if they discontinue it. I bet they do.

I just found a local CV and axle company to do axles for my drak, should get them back next week. They machine their own CV's and they are beefy. Might be a good source for pilot axles too.

what did the oem axle cost? do you still have the remains of the broke axle, or did you just get this new to have a spare on hand ?

I was just ordering as a spare. Are you planning on haing a fl400 axle rebuilt?

Unless you can feel play in the Pilot axles they don't need rebuilt, if you do get them rebuilt save ALL old used parts.

I agree, but do not confuse rebuilding a CV with maintaining a CV. Check you boots for leaks, and make sure the grease is not contaminated or old and dried up/ wore out. The boot kits including grease, boots, and clamps are less then $10.00.

I just wanted to clarify to some rebuilding would be replacing the internal moving parts I would keep all them unless you can see something really wrong with them.

Its time to find a inboard CV replacement Honda uses their own spline so finding something to match the final shaft might be a problem.

hmmm yeah I have never had my hands on a pilot axle, just wanted to offer that link up as I would imagine being discontinued the axles themselves cost big $$$. Last I saw drak axles on here for sale they were $400 or so.

I know this is a really old thread but...
can someone tell me what the difference in the pilot left and right axles are? I don't see any difference just looking, in fact my CVs are all showing some damage, the outers on the cup and a bit on the spider, as all the damage is on one side, my plan is to run the left on the right side and right on the left, that should give me another 30 years or so, the only thing that I can think of its the CV boot clamps and the direction that they are installed.

Also, has anyone found an replacement CVs from the automotive industry or SXS's?

BINGO - The cv boot band directions are the only difference...
Not sure anyone has found an out of the box replacement CV for the pilot...

PS
I've never broken a FL400 CV, I did break a ATVR long travel axle once, replaced it with one of Marv's tuff axles and reused the original Honda CV joints - No issues after that...

I think it might be the way they are pre spring torsioned?
I remember learning that when I had to change/upgrade my front torsion bars on my ol Navara/frontier front independent setup.
The torsion bars could only be put in a certain way because of pre torsion direction built in to oppose each sides rotation.
The ends are also marked Rear etc.For correct installation.

The direction of the bands is the only difference that I’m aware of.

great, thanks guys, axles installed, I swapped sides on the inner CVs and flipped the spider on the inner, should be good for another 35 years :-)
well at least for some time, that sled motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) is kind of hard on driveline parts, but sure is fun!

a 1981 honda civic right side axle fits. The inner cv fits in the trans, the axle shaft itself is inter changeable with the Pilot shaft and the outer CV almost fits..LOL, however the Pilot outer CV assembly is a direct fit.

Well that makes complete sense to me.
Honda would most likely use stuff they have already made and on the shelf when building a new machine. A good example is this drive shaft.

Shaft from 1981 Honda Civic --- years later (1989) they build an ATV (FL400) and need components. Hummm -- where can we get drive shafts ??
Engineer: Hey I got an idea !

Wonder if the cylinder is from some other dirt bike of theirs ??

Years ago when I was racing cars one of the guys in the shop was re-doing a Rolls Royce cylinder head. He said the valve guides were from a Cummins (I think) he said.
