Mike shipped me his Pilot Engine came UPS today I havent had much of a chance to look at it other than opening up the box to check for shipping damage, doing so I noticed right away part of the outer crank seal lip missing about 1/3 of the way around.

whilst taking the bottom end apart found the flywheel smashed, you can see a impression of the stator in the tin covering the magnets of the flywheel , I will try to take better pics if the sun is out tomorrow, these are as found pics with all the oil on them.

That black gritty muck is most likely coal dust!

Post subject:

Pressed the crank out of the cases, bearing retainer intact, I think it was the coal dust that done in the bearing not the normal bearing failure we been seeing, I think the seal was damaged or failed becuse of the missing rubber strip on the outside, the bearing is so loose and the crank wobbled so much you can see where the crank lobe was rubbing the cases, in the other pics you can see where the other end of the crank moved so much it allowed the flywheel to make contact with the stator...

The bearing from the mag side of the crank, looks like rust? this side was facing the crank not the seal.

Clutch side bearing would not come off the crank I tried pulling with a 300.00 snap on industrial clam shell puller and it would not budge we had so much pressure on it we got scared and backed it off for fear if the bearing exploded someone would get seriously hurt. I will have to grind it off as I have others in the past, pain in the ass as it takes a few hours because you cant nick the crank with the grinder and can have NO base metal reduction.

Could you chuck the crank up in a lathe and turn that bearing off of there? Just curious if it might be a quicker alternative than grinding the bearing off.
