I got the new starter last night and it looks like it is the right one.
WARNING YOU MUST CHANGE TO A LOCKING NUT, DO NOT USE IT RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX! Mine came apart after just a few revolutions of the Engine.

I bought the starter from here but its available other places too; https://www.dbelectrical.com/products/s ... -5923.html

Here is the starter spec from the site above. Looks like this was used on kohler lawn mower engines so there should be plenty of them out there.

I scanned the original Goki manual in a PDF but the file is to large to attach, I'll try and figure out how to attach that some how.

I have only test fitted the starter and have not tried it yet. I will have the Engine back together this weekend with the starter installed and report back after it starts.

What's wrong with the old starter ??
I see the threads are stripped off the end for the nut but that's all. Just re-thread it for a smaller nut and use a washer.
What am I missing ?? Does it not turn over ??

By the way great job at hunting down a replacement and posting here for others.

I think I can fix the old one but I don't like how small the nut will be after tapping the end. My fear is the nut coming off and beating everything up like it did for the last guy.

It also needs bearings and brushes too

It's possible the nut on your new starter will come off too.
I say that because it does not appear to be a jam nut or a nylock.
On a job like this I would use the red Loctite on that shaft nut.
At the very least Fup the threads a bit with a center punch (2 or 3 hits) so that nut can't come off that easy.

Aren't those threads left hand? The nut should tighten when the starter spins - not loosen???? Am I think about this correctly?

Here is a nice twist to this story. I just received my new "correct" exciter coil for oddatv and it looks exactly the same as the one I'm replacing.

I'm going to install it and see what happens but I don't have high hopes.

I put it partially together, started it and it worked. I pulled the Engine back out so I could rtv the pull starter and starter motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) and assembled then entire thing. I did the red rtv on the exhaust so now I have to wait 24 hours before trying it.

I did replace and fix all of the goki wiring, fixed the battery tray and installed it.

Should be good to go

Success and failure.

The starter came apart after three Engine revolutions. Luckily the Engine didn't start. I pulled the starter and fished the pieces out of the Engine. I covered the hole and used the pull starter and it started right up and ran great.

I have the throttle lever adjusted on the splines so he only gets a little throttle and he did great!

Ya, it has a standard nut on the end, no lock tite, no lock washer and it wasn't staked. I looked and the picture of the nos goki one and it has a different nut on it. I'm going to replace it with a locking nut, with lock tite and stake it.

You don't need to be clairvoyant. Just looking at stuff makes you go -- oooooooh.
That nut did not appear to be a jam style nut. It was not a nylock either. No chance any manufacturer would "waste" money on Loctite. SMALL chance they would make it left hand thread but that requires so special tooling so why "waste" money on that.
Todays businesses run on the maximum profit model. Give the customer the min and charge the max. Once they got your cash they don't give a shyte.
In 1989 I bought a brand new chev s10 king cab. In the first year the fuel injection blew up, the computer blew up, the throw out bearing went, the paint blew off the hood and they would not repaint my whole truck, only one panel at a time, bumper paint came off, they painted it 3 times, steering would not return to center, you had to manually turn it back, seat side panels ripped. I sent GM a letter. Got back the standard -- too fn bad you don't like our product because we got your money.

I removed the NOS goki starter to make sure it had a locking nut on it and it did. I red loctite the new one and added a locking nut. I the flattened the last two threads on one side a little on both starters.

Both my boys wanted to drive there odyssey so they ran them around the yard for a while.

We stopped for dinner and when I went to restart the 2nd odyssey the pull rope broke. It was brand new and I'm guessing I need to pull the entire Engine to get the pull start off because of the goki starter, how aggravating.

Lucky little buggers, I never had anything like that when I was kid.
Broken pull start -- I used a length of Para cord from the local gun shop.
Your having a tough time with these machines.

Just and update, the new starter is working good with the loctite and locking nut installed. I pulled the Engine and went through the pull starter again and smoothed some of the ruff edges. I think there were a few nicks in the metal that caused the pull rope to fray. I replaced the rope and assembled the Engine with the electric starter. I did the red RTV and this time I let it sit for 3 days and it seems like its not leaking, last time I waited 24hours and it had a small leak. I also fixed the steering too, the center shaft plate was bent and caused the wheels to be toe out. A few more test runs in the backyard and then hopefully a trip next month to the badlands with my fl350 and both my sons and there fl250s.

Just a friendly thought - do you have wrist restraints on those fl250s? I could not tell in the photos of the boys riding. Gotta keep those boys safe.

I know they wont be going supper fast, but teaching them safety now may last a lifetime, and you never know when one may role or flip.

I have not been to the Badlands in a couple years. I'm overdue.

They will be getting wrist restraints and new seat belts within the next week and way before we leave the backyard. I'll post when I'm heading to the badlands but it's going to be an easy ride with the kids. Probably me helping them most of the time which I'm ok with but anyone is definitely welcome.

Maybe be can do an adult trip, seem like a bunch of people on this board live right around here.

Wrist restraints and new seat belts on both fl250s. We made it to the badlands and had a great time. My kids used the starters several times with out issue. If anyone buys the starter I posted above make sure to change to a locking nut, loc-tite the nut and stake the threads.

We went to the badlands again yesterday, they used the starters all day long without any issues. We had a great time, my older son ended up breaking a hub stud and the other two nuts worked loose. Luckily we caught it in time and tightened the other two nuts down. It was right at the end of the day so we just headed back and loaded up for home. I might look into upgrading his rear hubs to the four lug.
