So awhile back I picked up two FL350 as a package deal. One was running and the other was not. Both needed work. I completed the repairs on the running one, sold it, made my money back and then some. The other has been sitting in my shop looking sad as ever so I started to dig into it. Initial review. - gas tank roached out - throttle & brake cable locked up - brake master and rear caliper frozen - no battery / pull start rope broken - severe sun fade on the powder coat as it sat outside for a looonng time I started by pulling the air box & carb. Mouse nest in the air box and the carb was rather dirty inside. I then rebuilt the carb & I then pulled the gas tank to replace the pull rope. The flywheel section of the Engine was pretty nasty and I could tell water or moisture had made its way in. Pulled the reed cage to inspect and reeds were shot and the intake boot had a 1in cut in it on the bottom. I replaced the reeds and installed a new intake boot. Checked compression and had 130psi. Sweet! Replaced Engine vacuum line for the fuel pump and bought a battery for it. The starter did not work at first as the bendix gear was frozen up. I was able to free it up & then worked as it should. Tried to crank it over and realized the clutch was hopping up and down. Either the bearing is gone or the crank is no good. I don’t think it’s the bearing because the crank has no play by hand. I ordered a case rebuild kit and have a spare crank to install. I have pulled then Engine and started to tear it down. I have replaced the bad cables & Nitrosport_5 rebuilt the brakes for me. I also was able to restore the paint using some rubbing compound and wax. Look 100% better than the sun faded patina. I’ll update once the parts come in for the Engine. I'll post some detailed photos on the rebuild of the Engine. I had considered making a video of the rebuild but only have the camera on my cell phone, so idk? I have not done any more work on the Engine. Parts should be in this week however. That's the way I see it. Get another machine back up and operational. Let another person enjoy a FL350 and have some fun. Make a little bit of money (sometimes). Everyone's happy. |

All I will be using from this Engine is the case half’s, head, starter, balancer/gears,and hardware. I will be using spare parts to reassemble then clean up the good parts from this for spares The bearings felt good to me and didn’t have any play. I will be replacing them anyway. The crank showed signs of damage I’m not exactly sure what caused it? Looked like someone was banging on it with a hammer at one point. Should have it reassemble this week. There was also some signs of ware on the crank half’s from the crank. Very little but there. Well... here it is. Had the bearings in the freezer over night and they dropped right in with a little heat on the case. Put the case half's together with a spare crank I had. It wasn't the prettiest but within spec and bearing was good. Installed new seals and the balancer gears. Then the stator and flywheel. I used a spare cylinder, piston w/rings, and reused the original head. Before I installed the cylinder I had to drill out & tap the top exhaust flange bolt because, it ALWAYS brakes! Once the cylinder and head were on I then installed the exhaust flange and intake w/reeds. Put it back in the buggy and ran a compression check on it. I have a nice gas tank in my #47 buggy I will be swapping into this ride. Hopping to get it fired up this coming weekend. Then it will be on to the brakes and I also have a bent left trailing arm that needs to be addressed. Shame on me. I did not do the oil vent mod on this Engine. In hindsight I probably should have because I was in there anyway, Oh well. I was going to hoserize the oil galleys also but I didn't do that either. When it's all back together it will head to the farm for a shakedown and then it will be off to it's new owner. It's a fine line of time and money when repairing something that will be sold anyhow. On my last rebuilds I welded the vent hole in the stator side case half. I have heard of others taping it and using a bolt with lock tight. I had a case half that someone used some type of epoxy to plug it. If I was to oil vent mod this Engine I was going to use JB Weld on it. For anyone else reading this.... This is the hole you should plug. Attachment:

Exhaust bridge problem leading into a 4-corner seizure. I don't see much rust. That old crank can probably be re-used depending on the bottom bearing. It can definitely be rebuilt. I've seen marks on the webs like that when the crank gets rebuilt - sometimes the rebuilder has to hit it with a sledge or pound it on the floor in order for the crank to get into alignment. There are better ways of doing that properly but again I've seen it before. |

I am pretty certain that when this crank was rebuild it either wasn't done properly or the repair failed. the top bearing feels great and it it in great condition otherwise. I saw on ebay a complete rebuilt crank for $400 shipped. It was listed as a vesrah kit. I have seen other pistons worn in that same spot before also. Anything you can think of that would cause that to be a spot for excessive ware like the exhaust bridge? |

Show us a clean picture of the top of that piston crown. What was the cylinder to wall clearance? |
