I was going to go with some fairly clean used fenders as opposed to new ones because I want to be able to drive this thing without fearing that I will mess up a new set of fenders. Also, I may want to cut open the rear ones some day for long travel and would not want to butcher new fenders up. I am going to patch and keep the old fenders as spares for my group (shoubadaba, Turtle-D, and myself).
Pics are coming.

Glad to see your new project Nick. When you planning a trip? My boys are on spring break the 21st of march thru the 4th of april. I was planning on making a run out to Glamis when I saw a clear weather window ( I don't like those stormy rides anymore ) I guess the comfort of middle age has its avail. Doug

Got more work done. Pulled the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )), took the parking brake cable out and lubed it, checked the brake pads, lubed the parking brake handle, everything looked ok. The slide on the carb looks ok, I tried to take some pics of it, but my camera just isnt the greatest. Tried different settings, nothing seemed to work. Oh well.

got some work done on tearing down the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )). found a few interisting things. first, there was only 1 gasket on the reed cage, on the outer seal was just some white silicone stuff. the reeds look to be boysen, but still have the metal guides. do you need to still have them installed with boysen reeds? next strange thing i found, take a look at the pic of the cylinder head dome. there is some strange pattern etched into it like a sunburst or something. no clue what it is for. the lower end looks like it has been taken apart at one point or another. it has the green gasket as well as white silicone in spots. also looks like someone used the "caveman" technique while working on it, there are deep scar marks under the reed cage area and under the exhaust manifold area on the crank case.
other than that, the cylinder has been removed and shoubadaba is going to clean up the ports for me and modify the reed cage. the piston looked ok, no signs of blow by or anything unusual.

Going to pull the cylinder too?

That is the turbo head mod that everybody lusted over and was highly sought after by dim witted owners that would buy anything they were told was better by publications like Dirt Wheels etc. Shortly after that mod became popular the "turbo crank" mod was invented to further extract more cash from the same fools, cant wait to see if your crank was done :-)

Hard to tell by the pic but it looks like someone modified some of the port windows on the intake side, in the same pic I can almost see some wear on the piston skirt maybe its just the camera angle.

Yes the theory was as the piston came up to TDC (Top Dead Center) and compressed the air/fuel the cuts in the head made the mixture swirl and burn better.

Every Engine builder I have ever talked to said no gains ever showed up on the dyno, physiological gains were priceless.

Search the web I bet you can still find arguments about this and the crank mod today.

I knew someone had to know what was up with the head. Looks funky to me. Having the correct cc dome makes more sense as far as power goes though. I wonder if this would actually lower your power since you are removing material from the chamber and essentially reducing your compression? LOL
I have the cylinder off, no pics yet. It is at shoubadaba's getting some TLC. I have more pics, earlier they werent cooperating.

I am looking at the head I am looking at the head gasket where is all the black stuff, looking at the top of the cylinder where is all the black stuff on the other side of the gasket?

No black coating on one surface then it has to be stuck on the other mating surface...

I can take a few pics of the gasket, but by now it has been tossed on the work bench and I wont know which was was up or down, unless it is labeled. When I pulled the head, it gave pretty easily and left almost clean surfaces on the head and on the top of the cylinder, I don't think the head gasket was seated and sealing propperly which is why there was all that oil in the coolant.
