Well, my Doomsday Prep'ing continues because i REFUUUUSE to be a victim of the hoarder-scavenger-price-lifters! The rep from Parker referred me to a local seal company that specializes in rotary seals. I have a call with that rep this afternoon.

Nope, that doesn't look right.

I've been playing phone tag with a rep from a local seal outfit (referred by Parker), who are actually located about 15-min from where I work. Today I simply sent the rep an email with a long-winded description of the need.

Yall should just do what I did. Its pretty simple, just have the dealership do a national parts search and they can locate you the OEM seal. It cost about 25 bucks to get it to your door but its well worth the piece of mind having an OEM seal.

Fatcat thought some of these seals were available in Canada but I can confirm they are not.
I just called Big Top Honda in Chilliwack a few hours ago and they said the two crank seals are
discontinued and zero in stock according to their computer, even on the national search.
If I find a supplier I will post.

Well, I gave the seal rep the go-ahead to crunch some tooling and piece-price numbers for me today. We'll see if I can't get these suckers back on the market. :-) No promises though. Could be cheap, could be outrageous, or break-even point could be beyond the sun!

I got a quote on this seal from a local vendor that Parker referred me to, but lead-time was 12-16 weeks, min order qty is 200 seals, and tooling is $450. This is a seal with complete rubber coverage. However, piece price cost is UNDER $5 each. Obviously price would be more to cover the tool costs. At $15/ea, break-even is around 77 units. I could prob swing a deal with them for 100-qty at $10-$12.

They're quoting all the Pilot and Odyssey 350 Engine seals for me in both Nitrile (NBR) and Viton (FE). Reading in all of the seal design guides, NBR has horrible weather and age resistance. And what do these machines spend most of their time doing? Sitting around idle outdoors or in an out-building. Viton would do better against the weather, aging, and is more resistant to synthetic lubes as well as ethanol. Also costs more!

Given the lead-time, I kinda' lost interest.

The 45x62x11 DC-type seals from BBS in the UK finally arrived (first order got lost).

Yes, they are 3mm (.120") fatter than stock. But they look great. Cost ~$9.00 each, shipped.

Are you considering a large group order? If so I would be interested in that.

Thanks for the research!

Nope, these are on evilBay sold by seller name "bearingseller", and sold as "fork seals". But the seal type and materials are a match.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fork-Seals-45x62x11-DC-Style-PAIR-/160890504493?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2575d2452d&ssPageName=RSS:B:STORE:US:101

They took 5-weeks to get here, but that's only b/c the first order got lost (small wallet-sized envelope). Should've only taken 2-3wks.

And when ordering 2 pair (4 seals), price was exactly $8.55 each, shipped.

Post subject:  Re: FL350 Clutch Side Crank Seal 91203-VM0-004

Evilbay seller "Oddatv1" has picked up the torch and is offering the correct seal in a kit with the other two seals for $37.99 shipped. Looks like he's selling them in 5-qty auctions. Why 5?? Seems like a pain.

I bought a couple sets and they are legit and correct. The 45x62x8 seal is right. The two regular seals are made-in-Taiwan nitrile seals, and can be had on evilBay for ~$2.50. So cost from a seal mfg'er is prob like $1 ballpark.

He told me he's paying $14 cost for the TC-type seal alone. Which sounds REALLY high especially since I got this part quoted locally at $3.49/ea if I bought 200-qty and then a one-time tool charge of $450 ($2.25/ea) and I'd own the tool, so, $5.74 cost. However, if they bought less qty, and charged more for tooling, the price would shoot up fast.

So let's break this down...

TC seal is costing $14/ea
Seal #2 is costing $2.40 (pretend he's buying them at evilBay's best price)
Seal #3 is costing $2.50 (pretend he's buying them at evilBay's best price)
USPS Small Flat Rate is ~$6.00 .
Total cost is $24.90

Less the sell price of $37.99

Margin is around $13 per kit, not including listing fees, paypal fees, and labor.

And IMHO, that's respectable. The investor deserves some cheddar for outlaying some cash on an endeavor.

Post subject:  Re: FL350 Clutch Side Crank Seal 91203-VM0-004

Here's some fun math...

0ddatv1 has also got a complete FL350 bottom end rebuild kit listed for $154.99, shipped: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-FL350-ODYSSEY-ATV-COMPLETE-CRANK-CASE-KIT-NEW/370892499639?rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D261%26meid%3D1351874999474690009%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D1088%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D370896645403%26

BUT WAIT A MINUTE.......
Say you bought their crank seal kit separate...$37.99
Their balancer gasket...$9.49
Their crankcase gasket...$9.99
Their recoil gasket...$10.99
Their pair of crank bearings...$45.99
Their pair of balancer bearings...$28.99
USPS Medium Flat Rate shipping...$12 .

Total of $155.44....so you get a 45-cent discount buying all that? C'mon....they can do better than that!!!

With doing some homework and searching good ol' evilBay, this same setup can be had for around $125 shipped, and this is with brand name bearings (i.e. FAG, NTN, TOYO, etc) and their correct 45x62x8 seal. Or save yourself ~$20 more and make your own gaskets with gasket material from Autozone.

I'll give Joe the credit for chasing all this stuff down.

I'm a cheap bastard and usually make my own gaskets but there are those out there that couldn't or wouldn't know how to make a gasket if their life depended on it.

Also chasing stuff down from different individuals or shops can be a pain in the ass plus you have to pay shipping costs for each of the different places where purchased. For what you get in the kit, it's not a horrible deal.

Kudos to ODDATV1......

100% agreed! :-)

Not trying to rain on Joe's parade whatsoever. Just very, very glad someone had the balls to make it happen.

Any more thoughts on this seal other than paying 23.00 for one on evilbay and not knowing the quality of the materials used?
