I am trying to locate a good price on aluminum so I can make some more skids
the one you see was my first attempt I will make the next one wider to cover the
lower a-arm mounting brackets pretty much out as far as I can go without the
arms hitting the skid, I will also extend it further back but will not cover the seat,
I remove my seat after every ride trip so I can wash and service my Pilot, looking
at my seat bottom and the frame in that area I don't see a need for more skid protection
guys that ride in a real rocky area might think different?

So far this one has worked out good in protecting and I have only had to pound out a
few dents, I don't think I need to go any thicker with the material.

Hoser, what’s up with the deckle plate? At a minim you should flip it over or are you trying to file off any obstructions it hits? Ha-ha. I do think you need to have the bumper skid plate over lap the belly plate. This will help you ride over the odd rock or log with out it bending the front of the frame (or jerking to a sudden stop).

As for a source of aluminum you have no further to look than down the street. If a no parking sign is not big enough then get a freeway sign. You’re a tax payer right? You already paid for it! (hey it’s just a joke, you get busted I don’t know you).

Yeah I don't like the tread plate either but it was all I had at the time, when its trying to
file away the high spots on the trail it don't seem to slow me down much and I think
the texture sets up a low pressure boundry layer on the bottom side and reduces drag
at higher speeds...

That is the first front bumper I built, once I crash it I will rebuild and the down
tubes will be lower and the skid will extend down and over lap, the last version
of my bumper is on wheelmans old Pilot Pilotnut should have some bumper pictures
here some place.

Not much detail in these http://pilotodyssey.com/wheelman14.htm

I got some aluminum and am going to make my second generation front skid plate
but before I do I need some input, for sure I am going to make it 1/2 to 5/8" wider
by the a-arm mounting points, I can extend the skid back another 7.5" to right
before the front seat mount bolts giving more coverage, but I still see no reason
to cover that far back, on my 2 Pilots the frame is not dented or scratched in the
area outlined in blue, no scars telling me that area needs protected, can you
other Pilot owners go look at your frame to see if yours has been taking a beating
in that area? I cant see hauling the extra weight around when it is not needed.

Your thoughts?

The reason I made a full skid plate was due to riding in P.A and Ny where most of the trails are really really rocky and there is sticks sticking up out of the ground every where so my entire underside was taking a beating. But otherwise if you just ride nice trails, tracks and dunes I don't see the need for a full skid pan....

Have any pictures of your skid?

Main reason I don't want a full skid is so I can remove my seat, I remove mine after each riding
trip so I can wash and do maintenance, every once in a while when riding the rocky rides I
feel a rock scrape the bottom of my seat but most of the beating is taking on the front and rear
skids, I noticed the ATVR skid takes a real beating but it also lowers the ground clearance in
the seat area so it is bound to catch more hits, if I compare the dent locations on my 2 Pilot frames to
the dents I have seen on the ATVR skid mine does not show abrasions in the same areas, I am
testing a mid skid that covers right behind the rear seat mounting bolts and extends over the
factory skid once I get it perfected I can see where a filler skid plate to cover the seat area
between the front and rear skid will be easy to do, east on and off for servicing...

Thanks

Sure, Ill post a picture as soon as I get time, im really busy with school right now. Mine is made out of diamond plate and was designed not to reduce ground clearance sense its almost bolted flat to the frame. I was able to achieve this because when I installed my corbeau seat the mounts I made raised the seat so I can see better and feel more comfortable.

Ok had a chance to test my skid at the 2004 Fall ECJ, plenty of rocks there and I
hit my share heh

Hit one spot on the front that was hard enough to smear the metal around but not a big
dent.

Post subject:  curious

so why not just do the full monty from front to back?
cover the seat area also? I hear the "extra weight" issue...but looking out for my fellow riders, seems your butt is just sticking out asking to get hit. Granted the rides I go on are on pretty easy terrain and have not encountered any rocks...knock on wood.

By the way it looks good. Did you have to drill into the frame to mount them?

I don't see where I need a full frame skid, scratching to the frame does not indicate
it is needed either, there is some scaring on my seat where I have hit stuff but this
is at low speed going over the crest of a sharp hill the front part of the Pilot frame
where I covered up with the skid usually hits stuff not the seat, the stock seat is like
a skid plate if you look at its construction a small extra skid could be added to the
seat if you wanted one I don't see the need.

No drilling on the frame is required the skid is bolted on the front using the lower
bumper mounts and in the rear held up with a strap around the frame like Dave
mounts his hoods to the frame...
