sorry guys..new to all of this.

just about to go out and buy my first Odyssey (1985 350R). the previous owner says that the clutch has just started to slip so im guessing a new one is on the top of my purchasing list. however, ive searched the net and cant find one; the Honda website says its discontinued.

can someone please point me in the right direction of a possible after-market clutch so i can start my Odyssey project.

Many Thanks in advance

There are 2 clutches, the drive and driven clutch.

The drive is attached to the engines crankshaft and the driven is attached to the gearbox behind the Engine. Which one do you suspect is slipping?

No
One or both clutches could have a problem and create a belt slipping problem you said one I just wondered what one was the problem knowing what one makes a huge difference in whats available and what they cost to fix, the repair could be 10 bux or 700.00

Is this reply a glitch?

i suspect the drive clutch to be slipping. i don't think the belt is slipping. do these clutches still have clutch pads like a certifugal clutch?

it would probably be easier for me to tell you the symptoms and you tell me what could be wrong.

i live in Qatar, Middle East. we have a lot of sand so it will be used on the dunes. when climbing a dune its as if the power is disappearing from the Engine although the revs don't fall. if i was in a car i would instantly look at the clutch (slipping). i have to be honest i am not familiar with the drive system on the odyssey at all and was only made an odyssey owner earlier this evening

NO that was not a glitch as admin I have two buttons EDIT and QUOTE on this site they are in that order on the OLD site they are QUOTE and EDIT for some reason some dumbass switched them around and I keep hitting the wrong button, after clicking on the LEFT button 10k times I forget some dumbass has swapped them around, that is one of the things on my list to fix that and removing the PREVIEW button don't know who the fool is that came up with that one if you don't like the looks of your post click on EDIT and go back and fix it don't need another button in the way, I think I will also remove the SAVE and CANCEL buttons to clutter the whole page, who is going to save a post your either going to post or your going to NOT post, you don't need a cancel button just use your browser back button, someone went button homo on this thing options you don't need..

IMO everything you see should have a ON/OFF button with it, a board that is truly configurable.

Oh I see, I am trying to find something you can read on how a CVT system works so you can get an idea.

IF the clutches are working right the Engine rpm will stay about the same when going up steep hills and under a heavy load as the load demand increases the clutches will adjust allowing the Engine to stay in the power ban all the time, the Engine rpm wont drop but as you go up a steep hill the ground speed might slow a little, as the load on the Engine decreases the clutches will up shift into a higher gear, its all automatic.

Any huge drop in RPM or bogging means the clutches are not reacting to the loads quick enough, worn or rusted dirty sticking parts, weak springs, worn out belt etc.

Its easy in soft sand on a steep hill to think things are wrong with the clutching the sand takes so much power just get out and try to walk up some of the hills your trying to drive up :-) you will see what I mean.

Usually when the drive belt is slipping you will smell burnt rubber, you might even hear it squealing, you usually see black rubber on the clutch faces, the belt will usually fail soon if its slipping.

At this point its hard to advise you, your clutches might ok and just need tuned or maybe something is worn and binding so it wont shift right, are the clutches all stock or after market, most by now have been replaced.

Maybe the clutches are ok and the Engine is weak, low on power ready for a rebuild or just not jetted correctly, does it smoke a lot when running?

How about posting some pictures we don't get to see that part of the world very often heard their is some great riding over their.

If you can post detailed pictures of the 350 we can probably tell you stuff about it you need to know.

ok, well its absolutely pitch black outside so pictures will have to wait til tomorrow. worn out springs and binding sound like a possible cause as this Odyssey has been sat for a year. the large spring inside the drive clutch looks fairly rusty/knackered. havent had a good look at the driven clutch.

as for the riding here, dunes as far as the eye can see and an in-land sea for camping and BBQ's - you can easily spend weekend after weekend on the sand here and not get bored. the only problem we have is fighting our way round the locals in their Toyota Landcruisers

How about a picture of the other clutch?

That spring will work perfectly all rusted up its whats under it and inside that matters, their is a shaft and a bushing that can get rusted and worn cause binding.

Best thing you can do is get the service manual out and start reading their is maintenance you can do on they are also serviceable.

i would love to be able to flick through the service manual but unfortunately the honda dealers here don't even know what an odyssey is let alone have the service manual kicking around.

In your driven clutch pic (the rear clutch) you are missing one of the slider slipper buttons-reverse-that push along the helix.
Check that you have all of them there.6 in total,3 for forward,3 for reverse. Also lightly finely clean the helix track plastic type kitchen scourer is great,,actually best to just service the whole clutch.

Project Update:

spent a few long hours working on it last night, managed to un-seize all 4 axles (however a new set of bearings may be required). still unable to un-seize the steering.
another problem i have come across...i have no brakes! the drums and caliper are there and look in alright shape. however, the master cylinder and lines are either missing or in very poor shape.

does anyone do a braided steel brake line set for the 350?

Stixs you funny man. IF you want to see the clutch open and close while operating the Engine at different speeds couldn't you just leave it in netural. Yes you could jack it up, If in gear better tie it off some how and point it into an open area in case the jack slips. Garage doors are expensive. You been hangin around me too long its starting to rub off. That's one smack to the back of the head for you. Cold one do funny things to you man. Any way whats for dinner friday night. I know pay backs a bit _ _. I'll be waiting.

Yea Im the Bozo right, been called worse,Hey I need an excuse to replace my 42 year old garage door, Ill just tell Jen "the old girl was on her last leg, I need $$$", sh!t hapens right. Dam you have all the good ideas Adnoh. Yea I have Pilots but i had FL350's before, Lots of new FL350 owners don't know this but, its not good to keep your transmission in neutral for any length of time, like reving in neutral for the sake of playing fun watching your clutches get fatter, bam Adnoh, in you face! LOL of course. THe Odyssey 350 trans needs the rear wheels to spin (trans output shafts) in order for the driven clutch shaft bearings to get properly lubricated, supposed to be lubed by the "splash" method.Running the machine in neutral will decrease the life of your trans, they are already 25 years old as it is right. Anyhow, Ill be sure not to jack up my Pilot the next time I want to watch clutch spinney...C ya'll!
