Crank shaft is out
Just like I thought the bearing holder came apart
the bearing that failed was on the clutch end of
the crankshaft.
Ok this has been a frustrating adventure, I ordered a new crankshaft and all
the necessary gaskets, seals and bearings necessary to replace my crankshaft
I figured the old crank was 11 years old and had a lot of miles on it so I would be
better off buying a new crankshaft order a second set of bearings, gaskets seals
and keep the old one for a spare, lets face it Honda is not going to make replacement
crankshafts for ever so it would be nice to have a spare laying around just in case.
Well about 5 days after ordering my parts from Hillside Honda they finally came in
well not all my parts just the crankshaft, so I called Hillside to find out when I would
be getting them come to find out the guy that took my order just ordered the crank
and nothing else ( BTW he don't work there any more ) so Joe (real nice guy)
assured me that I would get them right away.
If you look in the service manual you will see that there is a lot of special
tools needed to split the cases and remove the crankshaft. I was able to
make everything I needed to get it apart and had to buy a rather large
(40 mm) socket to get the big nut off that is behind the flywheel off.
The cylinder had some minor scratches in it after the beating it took
when the retainer pins from the crankshaft bearings decided to take a
tour of my motor so I decided it is better to bore the cylinder and clean
it up rather than just hone it and let it run on the loose side.
The guy that was going to bore my cylinder had been real busy and
it took him about a week to get to it then when he was about to make
his first pass the gears in his boring machine broke, he called
and said it was going to be about 2 weeks to get the gears, so
I took my cylinder to a local automotive machine shop to get the
bore done.
Update 5-21-00
I called the shop that is going to bore my cylinder
as of Saturday they haven't touched it, "were really backed up maybe
we will have it Tuesday" Grrrr...'
Oh well my new crankshaft is installed and the bottom end is back together
as far as I am willing to take it without first installing the top end and doing a
pressure test. I hate to spend 2 hrs and a side case gasket to find out that
the new crankshaft seal is leaking. I hope to have it back together and running
by the weekend!
Update 6-15-00
Pilot is back up and running better than ever! A friend of mine had
to re-cut the head to clean it up but the comperession went from the MacDizzy
#166 to #170, this winter I will have MacDizzy take it back to his designed #166
hoser..
